Kids Can Clean Together Contest

Over the past few weeks, some dedicated members of the Green Team worked hard to put together an entry for the Kids Can Clean Together contest.  The team decided to create a dolphin sculpture out of garbage to show how even trash, can be re-used  and turned into a work of art.  This shows the importance of cleaning up our environment and re-using what we can.

Check out our submission for the contest by following this link:

A HUGE thanks to the staff and students who committed so much time and effort to this:  Mr. Szentes, Stone, Cherie, Joy, Jenny, Melanie, Emily, Nigarsan, Jerry and Alina.  We are extremely grateful for your dedication and hard work!

March 31st: Earth hour!

This year, Earth hour is taking place on March 31st, (which is a Saturday) from 8:30PM - 9:30PM!
Hundreds of people across the world come together on this particular day to support this environmental event. Earth Hour has done a lot to raise awareness about climate change issues.
Earth Hour was organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). It first started in 2007. And it continues on to this day! Earth hour takes place every year, on the last Saturday of every March. More than 5,200 cities and towns in 135 countries worldwide switched off their lights for Earth Hour 2011!
So remember, on Saturday March 31st, from 8:30 PM- 9:30 PM, turn off all your lights!
Take part in this environmental event, on March 31st! And, if you can, try and educate others about what you know about Earth hour!

Ecoschools Middle Schools Conference

On Thursday, February 2nd, 9 Green Team members had the opportunity to participate in an exciting Ecoschools conference. These students were: Yin, Tarindi, Cherie, Joy, Stone, Kristen, Joey, Emily and Melanie. The conference was held at Evergreen Brickworks and many other schools participated in this wonderful event.

Our members participated in many workshops, like the Marshmallow Challenge and the Waste Audit. We also learned about other schools' green initiatives through their display boards.

Each team was awarded points after they completed each challenged. Overall, SAM earned enough points to place fourth! What was the winning prize? A bird house for the school!

Overall, our Green Team members learned a lot and came away with new ideas. Stay tuned for more exciting news!

Water Can:

Tips in writing the letter:

Objective: to direct the attention of key decision makers towards addressing importanat national and international water issues, for example, the recognition of water as a human right.

1) Research the issue and collect necessary facts.
2) Write Away!!

Note: when writing to politicians, it's great to start with a standard letter template for writers to follow, however, the more personalized the letter, the more attention it will receive.

Note: , for a guide line, keep in mind that 'Letters to the editor' is one of the most read sections in the newspaper.

3) Hand it in!! The due date is Tuesday December 8, 2009.

BTW: you are writing to Jim Prentice
